Football and ball game advice

In the spring and summer months, we receive a number of complaints about children playing ball games in public places. We advise you to read the following in order to create minimal nuisance.

For those of you who enjoy ball games, please remember:

  • Small grassed areas may only be suitable for young children, older children should go to a park.
  • Use a soft ball if you are playing in the street around houses and cars.
  • Respect “no ball games” and “considerate use” signs.
  • Ask permission before entering people’s gardens to collect balls and play equipment.
  • Don’t play near parked cars.
  • Check where your children are playing.
  • Discuss with the neighbours about appropriate times to play in the street.

Residents should remember that ball games are not anti-social behaviour. People are allowed to play on green open spaces, which are available for everyone to use.

  • Open spaces for every ones use and you should respect peoples rights to play in their own neighbourhood.
  • Compromise with your neighbours and agree appropriate times.
  • Within reason, expect some noise from children playing at weekends, after school and in the evenings.
  • Parents want their children to play nearby where they can see them.
  • bpha does not get involved in issues to do with ball games. If games are causing damage we would suggest you contact your Safer Neighbourhood Team at your local police.
  • Residents are expected to find a compromise on the issue of ball games.
