Your responsibilities

Being a considerate neighbour is important and is often the way to avoid problems with anti-social behaviour. Many perpetrators of anti-social behaviour don’t not realise that they are causing a nuisance to their neighbour.

  • Do not carry out loud tasks late at night. If you are going to carry them out during the day, let your neighbours know.
  • Don’t bang doors, if your doors do bang, take precautions and be extra careful.
  • Do not play your TV, radio, stereo or musical instruments too loudly. Place speakers and TVs away from shared walls.
  • Ensure pets are kept under control. Don’t let dogs bark for long periods and ensure that they are kept within the boundaries of your home.

Remember, you are responsible for the behaviour of your family, other visitors and pets. If they cause serious nuisance or harassment in or around your property, we will take action against you. If you are in doubt about any of these rules read your tenancy agreement, which contains all of the rules regarding anti-social behaviour.

If a neighbour approaches you about nuisance that they believe you are causing, try to see the problem from their point of view as well as your own.

What we expect from you when reporting/experiencing anti-social behaviour:

  • You should talk to the person causing the problem. It could be as simple as them not realising that they are causing a problem. If it is not appropriate for you to approach them, please contact the anti-social behaviour team for further advice.
  • When approaching a neighbour, stay calm and friendly while you explain how the nuisance is affecting you. Listen to what they have to say and think about their viewpoint. If your neighbour is being unreasonable, leave the discussion and contact the anti-social behaviour team for further advice.
  • Keep diary sheets. When you report anti-social behaviour to us, we will send you some diary sheets to complete. In order to take further action we need a carefully recorded description of every incident. Learn more about diary sheets.
