Good prospects for Elms Farm residents  - 06/02/2007

Motivation's what you need - that was the message at a major employment event held at Elms Farm, Goldington.

The Prospects 4 U event, held by housing association bpha at Church Lane Community Centre, aimed to give residents advice and information on getting back into work.

Local employers and volunteer agencies were on hand to talk to visitors, while entertainment came in the form of street dance from the Streetwise Kidz project.

Bedford College provided smoothies to keep guests refreshed as they picked up information on accessing training and other courses.

The event was part of the Pre-Employment Support Project, designed to help those who are out of work, get the skills and support needed to re-enter the workplace.

The two-year project aims to help 100 low-skilled people, including those with work-limiting illness and from deprived areas of Bedford, find a permanent job or training. Since its launch in January 2005, 34 people have been helped into work

Kate Hartshorn, community development officer at bpha, said: "This was our fourth pre-employment support event and it was really successful.

"It was great to see so many people turn out to make the most of the opportunities to find out about employment and training. And of course the entertainment and refreshments helped the event go with a swing.

"As the major housing provider in this area, we are committed to working with other groups to address a wide range of local needs.

"That means helping people into employment and to take up the training on offer to give them new skills. This in turn encourages personal development to enable people to lead more fulfilling lives."

The Pre-Employment Network Support Project at bpha, which forms part of the Learning Network, is supported by the European Social Fund and Bedfordshire County Council.
