Flying high at Shortstown  - 09/09/2011

A balloon launch marked the completion of the first affordable homes at Shortstown in Bedford.

Organised by bpha, the event was co-hosted by Chief Executive John Cross and the Mayor of Bedford, Dave Hodgson, who released hundreds of brightly-coloured, environmentally friendly balloons into the air. Representatives from bpha and the other partners involved also attended, along with members of the local community.

John Cross said: “We felt it was important to celebrate what has been achieved so far and to officially recognise the hard work and dedication of everyone involved. Shortstown is probably most famous for the RAF Cardington Airship Hangars, which is why a balloon launch seemed the most fitting way to celebrate this event.

“Building work commenced in March 2010 and so far more than 72 much-needed homes have been built at this historical location.”

Phase One consists of 72 two, three, four and five bedroom properties, 36 of which are for rent and the other 36 for shared ownership. Residents that live locally will have priority and all of the rented properties are now occupied, with only a few of the shared ownership homes remaining.

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Bedford Borough Council funded the project, and Bellway Homes and Kier Partnership Homes developed the homes.

Further phases are planned and a total of 300 homes will be built. A number of local amenities are also being built, including shops, a school, a GP surgery, and a children’s centre.

David Hodgson said: “This is a great example of partners working together to ease the ongoing housing shortage. Shortstown is in a prime location close to Bedford town centre, and I feel certain that a thriving community can be established here with support from bpha, Bedford Borough Council, and the residents themselves.”
