This project is a new joint venture between bpha
and the Bedford Bangladeshi Women's Association (BBWA) aimed at
Bangladeshi tenants, with whom BPHA has a relatively low level
of customer engagement.
Six members of BBWA were trained on how bpha
works and ran a trial project with eight tenants. Using home visits,
they ensure tenants are aware of their rights and responsibilities,
and have key bpha publications such as the
tenants' handbook, newsletter and repairs
free phone number. They also follow up some matters on the tenants'
behalf.
The project has been warmly welcomed by tenants who, due to language
and cultural barriers, may not otherwise receive the full range
of bpha services. Each tenant is also offered
a video in Bengali on tenancy issues and an "I need an interpreter"
card to show at Reception. In recognition of the many intiatives
run by the BBWA, this project is flexible, allowing the BBWA
to work at its own pace. The project is co-ordinated by a member
of the BBWA who is also a bpha tenant. The BBWA
is also helping bpha to consult further with
Bangladeshi tenants.
This project was shortlisted for the national iNbiz awards 2004.
