As you have no doubt seen, the serious issue of youth violence and knife crime in communities is taking centre stage in the National media at present. Tackling these issues and keeping our neighbourhoods safe is something bpha take very seriously.
Our Community Development team and Home Agents have been doing some fantastic work in identified areas of Bedford and Cambridge over the past few months to support the Community Safety Partnership (CSP). The CSP brings together agencies concerned with tackling and reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in Bedford Borough. Other members of CSP include:
- Bedfordshire Police
- Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service
- NHS Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group
- Bedfordshire Probation Service
The CSP’s vision is: “Tackling crime, disorder, anti-social behaviour, drug and alcohol misuse and increasing perceptions about safety and well-being in our communities.”
Community Development and Home employees have worked, often in the evenings and at weekends, alongside our partners from the Police and Local Authority to ensure residents are aware of how they can report crime when they see it and encouraging them to do so. Community Safety Priority Setting and Joint Action Group meetings have also been attended to reassure residents that the issues are being tackled. Strategies for doing this are discussed at these meetings and priority actions set. Working together with our partners is the only way we will be successful in dealing with these problems.
bpha are also looking at other ways we can help tackle these issues and will shortly be announcing some exciting new projects we will be supporting – so watch this space!
We want to ensure our residents don’t suffer crime in silence and we have been actively encouraging people to report suspicious activities when they see it. We have also been promoting the Neighbourhood alert system to increase awareness of crimes in their area and of Community Safety Events taking place where they live.
