For all adaptation requests, the first step is to arrange an assessment by an Occupational Therapist. Your local authority can arrange this for you. An Occupational Therapist (OT) will visit you and talk to you about what you are finding difficult and what might help. If the OT thinks you could benefit from some adaptations, they will send their recommendations to us and we will arrange for the works to take place.
For minor works, like grab rails, handrails, lever taps or toilet frames, we will usually be able to complete this work within 28 days.
For major works, like putting in a level access shower to replace a bath, installing a permanent ramp, internal alterations like widening doorways and so on, we have a short waiting list and we try to complete the works within 6 months but it is usually quicker than this. You will be kept up to date with progress and we will plan the works in with you, to find the most convenient time for you. More detailed advice is available from your local council or contact us.
We usually fund the adaptations ourselves. If you need more significant alterations to your home, then your local authority can help by using funding called the Disabled Facilities Grant (sometimes referred to as DFG). Your local authority can help you apply for this, and if your application is successful, they will arrange for the works to be completed with our permission.
