We are delighted to be awarded Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA) accreditation for the second time.
It’s estimated that one in four women and one in seven men have experienced domestic abuse after the age of 16. As a housing association with almost 20,000 homes and over 600 colleagues, we know that domestic abuse does or will impact the lives of many. It’s why taking action to prevent domestic abuse is given such focus at bpha.
DAHA accreditation is the UK benchmark for how housing providers should respond to domestic abuse in the UK. It means we are recognised as taking a stand to ensure we deliver safe and effective responses to domestic abuse. We want customers and colleagues to have confidence that we can and will help and support victims.
Colleagues are trained in recognising the signs of domestic abuse and we will work with the victim to do what it takes to get the right help, including putting anyone who is affected in touch with support organisations, completing a risk assessment to make sure the right help is given, and if needed, working with an Independent Domestic Violence Adviser to move someone to a new home.
“The Housing Officer has given me a new life. Without her I would not have been able to get away and I didn’t think that anyone would believe me, but they did and I want to thank them so much.”
We also have bpha colleagues who are Domestic Abuse Responders – a trained team from across all areas of the organisation who are there for any colleague experiencing domestic abuse, or worried about a colleague or customer.
DAHA said: "We are incredibly pleased and honoured to award bpha DAHA Accreditation. Everyone involved should feel truly proud of this remarkable achievement. We recognise the dedication, commitment, and hard work required to adopt and embed high standards of good practice, and the success here is deeply well-deserved.
“We have seen and heard from staff who demonstrated a clear pride in bpha's values which clearly align with DAHA values and we were particularly impressed with the strong internal and external partnership working.
“bpha demonstrated clear insight into the importance of taking a survivor led approach and identifying and responding to cases of domestic abuse. Some of the commitments to support this include a dedicated Complex Case Team working closely with specialist services, a robust training package to equip staff with skills and confidence and an array of wellbeing support offers.
“By undertaking this vital work, we are confident that the lives of victims and survivors will be safer. bpha is a shining example of good practice in the national response to domestic abuse, and a beacon for others to follow.”
