National Stop Smoking Day

9 March 2026

A smoke-free life starts with a smoke-free day, and No Smoking Day is coming up soon on Wednesday 11 March.

With smoking rates disproportionately high in social housing, targeted support is essential to tackling health inequalities and building healthier, more resilient communities.

The partnership between ourselves, Amplius, Peabody, Public Health and BeActive, works to improve health outcomes for residents. And, working with the local Public Health ‘Choose You’ service we have created three new roles to support our residents in Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes to give up smoking.

The Smoke Free Generation Officers have worked at a number of bpha community venues including Cafe Connect, Kingswell café as well as hosting roadshows at Tavistock Court, Wotton Vale and Bury Court.

They are also attending the bpha sheltered housing schemes working with the off-grid vaccination clinics to provide more joined up Public Health services for residents.

It’s never too late to quit smoking, with health improvements beginning almost immediately after stopping. Within 48 hours carbon monoxide levels will have dropped to those of a non-smoker, and after three months, lung function starts to increase.
