Words matter — especially when we talk about people’s homes.

A home is the foundation for everyone’s lives. It is where people live their lives, raise families, and develop their hopes and aspirations. It is where everyone wants to feel safe, healthy, secure and happy.
Stop Social Housing Stigma (SSHS), a tenant-led campaign that celebrates the value of social housing is concerned that some language and terminology used by housing providers and professionals is not about people living in homes
The group are exploring commonly used terms feel to residents and tenants and how language can be used to better reflect the idea of social housing as people’s homes. Through a survey and online consultation they want to:
- Consider language used in the sector and raise debate about it
- Promote a culture of home
- Understand preferred language amongst tenants
- Develop common currency about what language should be used
- Inform Government and others about the best terminology to use.
To get involved and have your say you can either:
- Complete a short tenant and resident survey by 25 September 2026
- Join an online consultation and discussion session.
